FITTING AFTERMARKET STRUTS TO FACTORY GEAR.
HOW TO
Here's the stuff we'll be working with, the factory retract units, the replacement struts, and at least one of the original wire struts.
Tools needed are a ruler, a sharpie or similar marking pen, and something to cut the factory wire with. It needs to be an abrasive type cut-off wheel, like one in a dremel, or the 4" angle grinder shown. BE SURE TO WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN WORKING WITH CUTOFF WHEELS AS THEY WILL SHATTER!!!!!
To fit the Shindin Machine replacement struts to Kmp factory units, you will need two pieces of the original strut wire, cut to 1 & 5/8", +/- 1/16". Here I have marked the strut for the cuts.... you can actually get both pins out of one strut, just be sure that the parts you are cutting out are straight, and don't get any of the bends included in your cut off piece.
Here is the wire after cutting. The ends will need de-burred after cutting. You will need to mark the locations for the set-screw flats, and grind them with a dremel tool or similar.
Big difference! Not only does the strut now have the correct axle angle if needed, but it is much beefier looking, and it's also shock-absorbing!
